Description
Ferro silicon magnesium (FeSiMg) is an alloy composed of iron (Fe), silicon (Si), and magnesium (Mg). It is commonly used as an inoculant and nodularizer in the production of ductile iron, also known as nodular or spheroidal graphite iron.
The addition of FeSiMg to molten iron promotes the formation of nodules or spheroids, which improve the ductility, toughness, and strength of the resulting castings. FeSiMg also helps to prevent the formation of undesirable graphite structures, such as flake graphite, which can lead to reduced mechanical properties in the castings.
FeSiMg can be added to molten iron in the form of cored wire, which consists of a steel sheath surrounding a powdered mixture of FeSiMg. The cored wire is fed into the ladle or furnace, where it dissolves and releases the FeSiMg into the molten iron.
FeSiMg is also used as a desulfurizer and deoxidizer in the production of steel, as well as in the manufacture of other iron-based alloys.
